El Castillo, also known as the Temple of Kukulcan or the Pyramid of Kukulcan, is a prominent and iconic Mesoamerican step-pyramid located at the ancient Mayan archaeological site of Chichen Itza in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. It is one of the most famous and well-preserved pyramids in Mesoamerica and has significant historical and cultural importance.

El Castillo is a four-sided pyramid with a square base, each side containing a steep staircase leading to the temple at the top. It is a classic example of Mayan step-pyramid architecture.  During the spring and autumn equinoxes, a dramatic light-and-shadow effect occurs on El Castillo’s northern staircase. The play of sunlight and shadow creates the illusion of a descending serpent, which symbolizes the feathered serpent deity Kukulcan (or Quetzalcoatl in Aztec culture). This phenomenon draws thousands of visitors to Chichen Itza during these times. The design of El Castillo is highly symbolic and aligned with Mayan astronomical and calendrical knowledge. The pyramid has 91 steps on each of its four sides, adding up to 364 steps. When the platform at the top is included, the total number of steps becomes 365, representing the days of the solar calendar.
