The statue is situated atop the Corcovado Mountain, which overlooks the city of Rio de Janeiro and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Christ the Redeemer is a colossal Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ with outstretched arms. It stands 98 feet (30 meters) tall and has a wingspan of 92 feet (28 meters). The statue is made of reinforced concrete and soapstone. The idea for the statue was conceived in the late 1920s as a way to promote Christianity and strengthen the faith of the Brazilian people. Construction of the statue began in 1926 and was completed in 1931.
